Top 10 Low-Content Book Ideas for Success on KDP as a Beginner

**Update: Please note that Puzzle and Colouring books are not low content - Hope you still enjoy the idea information.

If you are new to KDP or wanting to get started you are in the right place. Todays topic is all about low content books. These are the books that you are most likely going to be designing when you begin to create and upload your first books to the platform. Unless you are are skilled enough to have a manuscript or skills to be able to produce your own high content books. There are three different book types on KDP: low, medium and high content. Today I am focussing on low content. Low content books are a great way to get started on the KDP platform. If you have a computer and an idea and ready to learn some basics you are right to go. I have quite a few videos on you tube to help get you started.

Top 10 Low-Content Book Ideas

(1) Journals and Planners: This is a classic and ever-popular niche. From gratitude journals to fitness trackers, the possibilities are endless. You can target specific demographics like students with exam planners for busy professionals with productivity planners. These journals and planners can be created in a program called CANVA. You can use the free version of this software for this purpose as you won’t require anything more than some creative word publishing skills. You can also create the internal content for these types of books using Word and Powerpoint although I find that the placement of elements can become a little fiddly. If you are stuck for some ideas I highly recommend using a site like Creative Fabrica for ideas. This is a great site for inspiration and ideas. If you have a membership to Creative Fabrica you even have access to KDP content available for commercial use. Just a word of caution, if you are accessing content from Creative Fabrica then make sure you work with it in creating something original and not just copy and upload. One of the guidelines in KDP is to avoid repetitive content and this would be the case with the content from Creative Fabrica. Another terrific paid tool for creating low content books is BookBolt. This software applies the margins, bleed and templates for you to easily apply to book pages with the option to edit and add graphics to make your books stand out.

(2) Adult Coloring Books: Adult coloring books are a great stress reliever and tap into the growing trend of mindfulness. Design unique and intricate patterns or cater to specific fandoms with themed coloring pages. These are incredibly popular on KDP. Before you get started make sure to go to Amazon and take a look at the colouring books that are on offer. You will get more success not by copying what is already doing well in the bestseller list but by looking for topics or themes that have less books competing with each other. I saw an example of this in my search the other day - there are plenty of dog colouring books but someone created one called dogs in cars- it is still about dogs but has a different theme which may make it stand out to buyers. This is the trick with most KDP books. Looking for good demand with less competition.

If you are not an artist don't fear you can make use of AI programs which are getting so much better these days. There are some prompts that do work better than others when it comes to generating AI colouring pages. I have a link to a simple freebie at my Payhip store that you can use to help you. Just make sure that your AI images look good and would be suitable for coloring. Images that are shaded or have weird objects and people with 15 fingers and missing legs are not going to be enjoyable for your customers to colour. This means carefully examining and curating images that are suitable but will give you a better product in the end.

You can also take a photo and use a photo editing program to convert it to a fine line image for colouring. The success of this relies heavily on the software being used. I have used Affinity and Procreate with varying success.

The one tool that I find works terrifically is Picture to Line online Creator Tool

The work doesn’t stop there unfortunately. I highly recommend also running your images through a vectorising tool. This improves the overall image quality of the colouring page giving smooth black lines perfect for colouring. I use an Vectoriser AI for this purpose. There are others but I find that this is my preferred one.

There is great scope for creating books in this niche

(3) Sudoku and Puzzle Books: People love a good brain teaser! Create puzzle books with a variety of difficulty levels or niche-specific puzzles, like logic puzzles for math enthusiasts.

These are incredibly popular across KDP and there are many online tools to help you create these puzzles. The one I like to use is included in Book Bolt. You can select the type of puzzle you want, add your variables and the software will generate the puzzles and the solutions for you. The pages can be easily formatted with tools within the program to give them a unique look.

From mazes, dot to dot, Sudoku, hangman, crosswords ro a combination of these set out in a themed book the possibilities are endless

(4) Guestbooks and Travel Journals: These are perfect for capturing memories and special occasions. Design beautiful guestbooks for weddings or create themed travel journals to inspire wanderlust.

Ideas for internal content for these books can be found searching content on Creative Fabrica. There are so many different occasions that a guest book or memory book can be created for.

Travel journals are also hugely popular. These can be simply lined journals where the user dates and write to something a little more where you have included boxes or fields for the user to write in.

(5) Habit Trackers and Goal Planners: Help people achieve their goals with well-designed trackers. The options for these types of books are plentiful examples could include catering to specific goals like language learning trackers with space for vocabulary and grammar practice or financial planning templates with sections for budgeting and debt tracking. You can make your trackers and planner stand out with progress bars, charts, or visuals to make tracking appealing and motivating. Change up the variety of layout options, like daily, weekly, or monthly trackers, to cater to different user preferences

(6) Logbooks and Trackers: From gardening logs to pet trackers, niche-specific logbooks cater to specific hobbies and interests. Go beyond the basics for examples instead of a generic gardening log, create a specific tracker for herbs, vegetables, or flowers. Offer pet trackers focused on a particular type of animal, like a dog training log or a cat health tracker. Take your logbook and trackers to the next level by Including helpful tips and information relevant to the specific hobby or interest. For example, a gardening log could have planting guides or a pet tracker could have sections for vaccination schedules.

(7) Activity Books for Kids: Keep the little ones entertained with educational and fun activity books. Consider coloring pages, mazes, or word searches with a learning twist.

The key is understanding the developmental stage of your target audience. Younger children might enjoy simpler activities like coloring pages and mazes, while older kids might benefit from more complex puzzles or logic games. You could add elements like hidden pictures, mazes with multiple solutions, or cut-out activities for added fun and engagement. Integrating educational skills into the activities is also a great way to make your book stand out . For example, a word search could focus on sight words or a coloring book could feature animals with their names written next to them.

(8) Recipe Journals: Foodies will love a dedicated space to document their favorite recipes and create a personalized cookbook.Include sections for different types of recipes, such as appetizers, main courses, desserts, or international cuisine. Add conversion charts for measurements to cater to an international audience. Don’t forget to leave ample space for users to write down personal notes, modifications, and recipe reviews.

(9) Workout Journals and Fitness Planners: Help people stay on track with their fitness goals with workout logs and meal planning sections. Allow customers to track different aspects of their workouts, like exercises, sets, reps, weight, and progress. Consider including space for meal planning and calorie tracking for a holistic approach. Make the book special by sprinkling inspirational quotes throughout the planner to keep users motivated on their fitness journey. You may even wish to include specific templates for different workout types, such as strength training, cardio, or yoga.

(10) Self-Care and Wellness Journals: Self-care is a hot topic, and journals can be a great tool for mindfulness practices, gratitude prompts, and mood tracking.

These types of journals are hugely popular in KDP and do well later in the year when people are looking to create their resolutions for the new year by getting the mind body and soul fit and healthy for the new year

Things to include might be mood trackers to help users identify patterns and triggers. Consider incorporating different mood tracking scales or color-coded charts. Offer daily or weekly gratitude prompts to encourage users to reflect on the positive aspects of their lives. Integrate simple mindfulness exercises like guided meditations, breathing exercises, or journaling prompts to promote relaxation and stress reduction.

There you have it, everyone! These are just a few ideas to inspire your low content creativity. Remember, the key is to not only identify a niche with a dedicated audience but to create a high-quality product that stands out. If you think about the sheer number of low content books on the KDP platform, what is going to make a buyer want to purchase yours. While it may take you a bit of extra time it is the attention to detail that will really set your low content book apart from the rest.
